Fairshake backs 32 House candidates after crypto bill stalls

Fairshake announced Monday, October 5, that it will support 32 House candidates in November’s midterm elections, with six set to receive $1 million each, according to The Associated Press. The crypto-focused political group said its slate includes 19 Republicans and 13 Democrats, all of whom supported legislation that was a priority for the industry.

Which House candidates will receive $1 million?

Fairshake plans to give $1 million each to Republicans French Hill of Arkansas, Bryan Steil of Wisconsin and Bill Huizenga of Michigan, and Democrats Janelle Bynum of Oregon, Steven Horsford of Nevada and Derek Tran of California. Roll Call reported that the 32-candidate effort also includes House leaders such as Republican Tom Emmer and Democrat Pete Aguilar.

Fairshake has not disclosed how much it plans to spend on the other 26 House candidates. The Associated Press reported that Fairshake and its affiliated political action committees had about $120 million in cash at the end of August.

Why is Fairshake expanding its House support now?

The slate follows the Senate’s failure to advance the CLARITY Act, which would establish a federal regulatory framework for digital assets. The Senate blocked the measure in September after Democrats objected to its ethics provisions, according to Roll Call and the Associated Press.

Fairshake spokesperson Geoff Vetter told the Associated Press that the group supports pro-crypto candidates in both parties. He said Fairshake and its affiliated groups had spent $40 million supporting 29 Democrats and $31 million supporting 28 Republicans in primaries and special elections this year.

How much more could Fairshake spend?

Fairshake has not said whether it will put additional money into House or Senate races before November, the Associated Press reported. In September, it announced plans to spend nearly $30 million opposing Ohio Democratic Senate candidate Sherrod Brown.

The group says it backs candidates who support crypto policy across party lines. The next Congress will take up the stalled market-structure legislation, while Fairshake’s total spending in the remaining races is still undisclosed.
