Relay Bridge Fees and Swap Costs: What Quotes Include
Bridge quotes cover cross-chain transfer charges; swap costs add trading fees and price impact. Compare the amount received, network gas and every route step.

A relay bridge charges for moving value between networks; a swap charges for converting one token into another. A cross-chain swap can include both, so the amount received is a better comparison than a single fee label.
What does a relay bridge fee pay for?
A bridge quote can include the source-chain transaction cost, a bridge or solver charge, and any destination-side cost needed to deliver funds. Ethereum.org says bridge fees can be fixed or variable, depending on gas costs and route liquidity.
Routes also differ in how they move assets and who provides liquidity. For a breakdown of how relay bridges move assets, see the guide to bridge types. The mechanism helps explain why two routes between the same networks may show different charges or delivery amounts.
Which costs belong to a token swap?
A swap converts one asset into another and may charge a pool trading fee as well as network gas. Uniswap Labs separates those charges in its swap screen; it also shows price impact, the change in price caused by the trade against available pool liquidity.
- Trading fee: charged by the pool or route used for the conversion.
- Price impact: the effect of trade size on the pool’s price; it can reduce the output amount without appearing as a separate fee.
- Network cost: gas paid to process the transaction, which varies with network demand.
Slippage is another possible difference between the quoted output and the amount received when the trade executes. Uniswap Labs distinguishes it from price impact: price impact comes from the trade itself, while slippage reflects price movement before execution.
How should you compare bridge and swap quotes?
Compare the final amount delivered in the token and network you want, then inspect the cost breakdown and route. A same-token bridge mainly moves an asset across networks; a cross-chain swap also converts it, adding trading costs and possible price impact.
Check whether the quote includes source gas, a bridge charge, destination delivery and any swap. If a route involves multiple transactions, account for each network cost. Ethereum.org notes that bridge costs depend partly on route liquidity, while Uniswap Labs says network costs rise or fall with network traffic.
For moving the same asset, choose the route that delivers more after charges while meeting your timing needs. For a different destination token, compare cross-chain swap quotes by net output and review the trade’s price impact before confirming.
